When people think about dressing for a day at a ski area, winter gear usually comes to mind. But what you wear is just as important during the summer months.

From hiking, mountain biking, and ziplining, to outdoor concerts and craft fairs, summer adventures at New Hampshire ski areas often mean spending the whole day outside, and the weather can change fast! A little planning can help you stay comfortable from your first activity to your last.

Here's what to wear and how to prepare for a fun and safe day in the mountains.

Wear Moisture-Wicking Clothing

If you're planning to be active, choose lightweight clothing made from moisture-wicking fabrics. These materials help pull sweat away from your skin, keeping you cooler and more comfortable throughout the day.

Cotton is fine for casual outings, but it tends to hold moisture, which can leave you feeling damp after a hike or other activities.

Dress in Layers

Summer temperatures in the mountains can change quickly. Mornings may start cool, afternoons can be hot and sunny, and evenings often cool off again. Be sure to pack a light fleece or windbreaker that you can easily throw on if the temperature drops or if you're taking a scenic chairlift ride, or exploring the Mount Washington Auto Road.

Wear Comfortable, Supportive Footwear

Your footwear should match your plans for the day. If you're hiking or exploring trails, wear hiking boots or trail shoes with good traction. For craft fairs, scenic rides, or walking around the base area, supportive sneakers are a great choice. Leave the flip-flops for the beach. Uneven terrain and open-toed shoes are not the best combination.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

The sun in the mountains can be stronger than many people expect, especially at higher elevations. Be sure to bring:

  • Sunscreen

  • Sunglasses

  • A hat or visor

  • SPF lip balm

Don't forget to reapply sunscreen throughout the day, especially if you'll be outside for several hours.

Be Ready for Changing Weather

Summer weather in New Hampshire can change without much warning. A sunny morning can quickly turn into an afternoon shower.

A lightweight rain jacket or poncho takes up very little space in your backpack and can make a big difference if the weather changes.

Before heading out, especially if you're planning to hike or spend time at higher elevations, check the New Hampshire Higher Summits Forecast on the Mount Washington Observatory Weather page. It's an excellent resource for current conditions and forecasts to help you plan your adventure safely.

Pack the Essentials

A small backpack is perfect for carrying everything you'll need during the day.

Consider packing:

  • A reusable water bottle

  • Snacks

  • An extra layer

  • A rain jacket

  • Sunscreen

  • Bug spray

  • A portable phone charger

Stay Hydrated (!!)

Whether you're hiking, biking, or simply enjoying the fresh mountain air, it's important to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it whenever you have the opportunity. For longer days on the trails when you may be far from facilities, it’s always a good idea to have a water filter on you to fill up in a nearby river or flowing stream.

We often say there's no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothing. That advice doesn't stop when the snow melts. No matter how you spend your day at a New Hampshire ski area, dressing appropriately will help you stay comfortable and ready for whatever the day brings. Check the weather before you head out, pack a few extra essentials, and remember that mountain conditions can be different from what you experience at home.
